Sweetness, Sacrifice, and Self-Worth: The Story Behind FRESAS

As an independent fine art painter working between Salt Lake City, Utah, and my hometown roots in the Kansas City metro area, my canvas has always served as a mirror for personal memory and cultural grounding. My home growing up was filled with stories—my mother is from Mexico, and she made sure we remained deeply connected to where she came from. Her heritage shaped our worldview, but what stayed with me just as vividly was her quiet strength and devotion.

When I was young, money was tight. When I was younger we often went without luxuries, my mother created a sentiment that transcended our circumstances: she always prioritized buying fresh strawberries.

Strawberries have been my favorite fruit for as long as I can remember. For my mom, buying them wasn’t an everyday indulgence; it was a deliberate act of care. She wanted us to know the worth of taking care of our bodies and making sure we don't take the small things in life for granted.

"FRESAS" is my artistic tribute to that life lesson.

Spanning 30" × 59" (2'6" × 4'11"), this original painting elevates a familiar fruit into a large-scale symbol of Matriarchy. The generous horizontal format gives the narrative room to breathe, combining rich pigments, layered texture, and expressive movement. Whether placed in a mountain home in Park City or a modern urban space in Kansas City, Missouri, the work serves as an emotional centerpiece that commands attention.

FRESAS original large-scale mixed media painting of strawberries on canvas by contemporary fine art painter Izzy Pierce, serving Salt Lake City and Kansas City.
